Open the brackets and make the past continuous. Use long forms in negations, i.e. was not / were not.
Example: I was writing a letter when my friend came. (to write)
Lily was not sleeping when I called her. (not to sleep)
1. When I got home, all the children . (to cry)
2. When I entered the room, the children . They were drawing. (not to read)
