The Oscar is its casual nickname; the official name of the golden statuette is the Academy Award of Merit. The first award show ran a total of 15 minutes, which is a far cry from the hours-long marathons they’ve become.

The statue’s nickname, Oscar, has conflicting originatororiginallyoriginateorigin stories, but the most popular narrative credits Margaret Herrick, Academy Award librarian and eventual Director of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Herrick claimed that the statuette looked “like her Uncle Oscar.”
